Heel Pain

Common Causes of Heel Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

  • Plantar Fasciitis – Inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia, the strong band of tissue running along the sole of the foot, often causing sharp heel pain that is worse first thing in the morning or after rest.
  • Overuse and Load Changes – Sudden increases in walking, running or standing, or changes in training intensity, distance or surfaces can overload the plantar fascia and lead to persistent heel pain.
  • Footwear and Poor Support – Shoes with inadequate arch support or worn cushioning can place extra strain on the heel and plantar fascia, contributing to pain during everyday activities.
  • Tight Calf Muscles and Reduced Ankle Mobility – Limited movement through the ankle or tight calves can increase tension through the sole of the foot, making heel pain more likely to develop and slower to settle.

Many causes of heel pain share similar symptoms, which is why accurate assessment is essential. At The Practice, we assess your foot mechanics, movement patterns and contributing factors to identify the true cause of your pain and guide the most effective treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plantar fasciitis is often linked to overuse, poor footwear, changes in activity, or reduced foot strength. In many cases, there is no single clear cause.

We assess your foot and tailor treatment using a combination of osteopathy, shockwave therapy, clinical acupuncture and guided rehabilitation where appropriate.

Recovery times vary, but many patients see significant improvement within a few weeks. Chronic cases may benefit from a short course of shockwave therapy.
